Xmas drink driving mates crash close to each other By Andrew King

TWO MATES who had been drinking at a Christmas function in Rolleston crashed their vehicles on the same road about 30sec apart on Thursday night. One of the vehicles flipped and landed upside down in a water race on Lincoln Tai Tapu Rd about 10pm. The other vehicle

also ran off the road and landed in a dry ditch. Said Senior Constable Andy Williamson of the driver who ended upside down: “I don’t know how the hell he got out. He was lucky he wasn’t killed.” Both drivers were out of their vehicles when emergency services arrived. When police tested them for alcohol, one recorded more than 900 mcg/L and the

other more than 500 mcg/L, Senior Constable Williamson said. Both drivers are under the age of 20. The legal limit for those under-20 is zero and 250 mcg/L for those over 20. The drivers were heading to Tai Tapu when they crashed. “It is just stupidity really,” Senior Constable Williamson said. “They both knew they would have to get home at

some stage and drove anyway.” Lincoln deputy fire officer Roger McClenaghan said the car that landed upside down was “an absolute mess”. “I’m not sure if the second guy was looking at his mate that had just crashed and then crashed himself,” he said. Both will be charged with excess breath alcohol and will appear in the district court. It

was a busy weekend with crashes for the Lincoln fire crew. On Saturday, firefighters cut two women from a vehicle after it rolled on the Christchurch Akaroa Rd, near Tai Tapu, at about 4.45pm. They were taken to Christchurch Hospital. On Sunday, a 45-year-old man was cut from his vehicle after a crash on Edward St, Lincoln. He was taken to hospital.

It comes after he won the New Zealand national finals section of the Australian Brain Bee Challenge held in Sydney earlier this month. Alan has now been selected to represent New Zealand in

Berlin, while Melbourne’s Mac. Robertson Girls’ High School student, Elaine Cheung, was chosen to represent Australia. Alan said he had always had a passion for science and is excited to travel overseas in July. “I felt immensely proud, and excited about the challenge that lies ahead,” he said. News Petition fails to stop bank closure By Georgia O’Connor-Harding AN 1100-PLUS petition has failed to stop the closure of Westpac’s Lincoln branch. Bank officers union, First Union, circulated the petition throughout the township to try and convince Westpac the branch needed to stay open. But the bank last week announced it would close, alongside the New Brighton and Sydenham branches. The Lincoln branch will close in February. Staff will Linda Carville be transferred to other branches. Union southern region secretary Paul Watson said it was an “outrage” Westpac had not allowed more time for consultation. The union was still circulating the petition in the community. Mr Watson said it was dissatisfied and unhappy with Westpac’s decision not to extend its consultation period. “If they pride themselves on being good corporate citizens, then any decent organisation would do the right thing, before

they made any decisions to make the closure, to talk to the community first,” he said. Lincoln resident Linda Carville, who helped circulate the petition agrees: “They haven’t given people the opportunity to express their feelings about it or meet with them and I think that is very poor,” she said. First Union unsuccessfully tried to get Westpac to extend its consultation until mid-March to give the public a better opportunity to give feedback, Mr Watson said.

Westpac spokeswoman Heather Shiels did not answer Selwyn Times’ question on why it would not extend its consultation with the public until March. Mrs Carville said Westpac was doing the community a “real disservice.” She will now change banks. The petition was a way of letting Westpac know the feeling in the community. Selwyn MP Amy Adams said it is a disappointing and shortsighted decision. “It leaves my entire electorate

In Brief WEEKEND BLAZES Firefighters dealt with three small grass fires in Selwyn at the weekend. Rolleston firefighters quickly extinguished a small grass fire in a paddock on Jones Rd at about 12.40pm on Saturday. At about 5pm, firefighters from Dunsandel and Burnham battled a 100m x 5m grass fire on the side of Norwood Rd, Burnham. On Sunday, crews from Rakaia and Southbridge extinguished a small fire, about 10m x 5m, on the side of State Highway 1 near the Rakaia Bridge. The district is in a restricted fire season, requiring permits for any open fires. VEHICLE CHECKS Police will be checking to make sure karts, motor-cycles and other vehicles being used in public spaces over summer have a warrant of fitness and registration. Users will also be checked to ensure they have appropriate safety gear. Constable Herb Inwood said popular spots around the district, such as Coes Ford, will start filling up soon with campers. “We want those who are going to use those vehicles to make sure they are legal,” he said.

News $1m council funding call for centre By Georgia O’Connor-Harding RATEPAYERS ARE being asked to pay $1 million to build a new community centre in Hororata. Go Hororata is strongly urging the district council to get behind its plans for the new centre on Hororata Reserve. It is asking the district council to pay a third of the cost – $1 million. It is estimated the cost of the building is expected to be between $3.3 million and $4.2 million. Hororata Reserve Management Committee chairman Dave Sligh told the district council meeting last John Morten Wednesday Hororata “absolutely needs a new community centre.” He said the project is financially achievable and will not significantly burden ratepayers or council. A decision has not yet been made by the district council on whether it will fund the project or how much it will put into it. Go Hororata is hoping to see the centre built by 2022 with

three years of fundraising and two years of construction. Residents will get the opportunity to have their say on the hall, which is currently in the district council’s draft annual plan, and will go out for public consultation next year. It comes after Go Hororata appointed an independent party to undertake a feasibility study in June to determine whether the Hororata Hall needed to be refurbished or replaced. It also considered how the facility would be funded and if it would impact the ratepayers. District councillor John Morten said he is sympathetic to

the Hororata community as they have been seriously knocked over in the earthquakes. “I think there is a lot of merit there and it looks quite positive at this stage,” he said. Cr Morten said whether the plans were appropriate or not it was a question for further down the track. He said the $1 million may not all necessarily come from the council – it may assist them with making applications to other funders. Hororata Community Trust chairman Richard Lang said it plans to raise another $1 million with the help of large charitable

organisations along with the final $1 million being raised from the community. He said there is a donor willing to match whatever the community raises dollar for dollar. The donor was unable to be named. Hororata Community Trust already has more than $250,000 sitting in its account from fundraising events including the Hororata Highland Games which raises about $50,000 to $60,000 each year. Mr Lang said it envisages the first $700,000 coming partially from the district council selling

Mr Sligh said there is a strong feeling of support for a new fitfor-purpose community centre. “The support is driven by several compelling arguments that include the existing hall is no longer fit-for-purpose, it is isolated from the reserve . . . the hall’s kitchen and toilet facilities are substandard,” he said. Mr Sligh said residents have voiced their concerns about safety for all users and the winter heating and summer cooling is “woefully ineffective.” The closest community centre to the township is the Glentunnel Community Centre with a capacity to hold 200 people. The new space is planned to hold a minimum of 250 people. ‘Drown him’ case: Property raided By Andrew King POLICE HAVE raided a house and seized shoes and a cellphone as they close in on teenagers involved in the ‘drown him’ assault case. Four teenagers attacked a 15-year-old, dragged him to a water race and held his head underwater chanting “drown him.” The incident took place in Rolleston on November 4 after a fireworks display. The victim spent the

night in hospital because of his injuries. Police have been tightlipped over their investigation since the attack was revealed last month. But they confirmed a search warrant was executed on a Rolleston property last week. “Police have executed a search warrant in regard to this matter as we continue to gather evidence,” a spokeswoman said. “Police have identified people of interest and no

one else is being sought. Police are continuing to support the victim.” Star Media has learned shoes and a cellphone were seized. But police would not discuss any specifics of what was taken in the raid. The teenager was assaulted when he allegedly refused to hand over his cap after he was confronted by four other teenagers on Tennyson St at about 10.30pm, November 4.

The district council has approved an increase in casual, family, swim school and membership fees across the board for the first time since January last year. Centre facility manager Kathy Moore told the district council meeting last week it was anticipated the fees would increase significantly every second year. “The Christchurch City Council do increase their fees every year. It is a bit of a nightmare for them . . . we determined that probably wasn’t the best thing for us,” she said. The facility’s operating costs include electricity, staffing, pool chemicals and maintenance. Increases to swim school classes will come into place in January while the remainder of the fees will increase in February. Ms Moore said a lot of background information-gathering had been done and it is looking to stay in line with the cost of

other pool facilities across Canterbury. Currently the Christchurch and Ashburton councils charge $6 for an adult entry fee while councils in Timaru and Waimakariri charge $5.50. Ms Moore said the Waimakariri District Council had not increased its fees since 2015, but was currently reviewing them with an increase anticipated next year. The district council also

looked at charges at Sockburn’s Kings Swim School and compared them to its own learn to swim and swim school prices. “I think overall, we are middle of the road. We are not the cheapest and we are not the dearest. I think these are appropriate charges for our community,” Ms Moore said. The centre operates at a set annual revenue target with a 50/50 cost recovery (user pays/rates subsidy).

District councillor Craig Watson asked if other pools with lifeguards across Selwyn had the same 50/50 ratio, as the Rolleston-West Melton area pays a higher levy for its facilities. He said he was not disputing those costs but it was about making sure there was a consistent model across the district. Ms Moore responded, saying while it does not have a 50/50 split of user pays/rates subsidy for all lifeguard pools at this stage it is something the centre will work towards.

It was part of the 120th anniversary celebration the birth of writer Rewi Alley’s birth, who was born in Springfield but lived in China for more than 60 years. Selwyn Sister City Committee chairwoman Allison Rosanowski said it is expected there will be an increase in Chinese tourists stopping in Springfield. More than 50 guests from China were at the anniversary celebration. They were greeted by Springfield residents involved in the Rewi Alley statue in 1991 and the information centre in 1997 at the Springfield Rewi Alley Memorial Park. Alley’s foster son Deng Bangzhen along with his wife Lu Bo were honoured guests from China. Mr Bangzhen and his wife travelled from China to build the sculpture of the Rewi Alley statue in 1991. Selwyn’s Sister City, ZhangyeShandan sent five delegates including the Shandan Bailie School’s principal.

This school in rural Gansu Province was established by Alley. The event was attended by Mayor Sam Broughton, Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel, Hurunui Mayor Winton Dalley and Waimakariri Mayor David Ayers. Professor Bill Wilmott, who was the instigator of the first Rewi Alley memorial spoke about his initial visits to ask the people of Springfield to consider a memorial. Brochures about the site of the

original school and schoolhouse was distributed and the Selwyn Sister City Committee is seeking feedback prior to making a new information panel. The panel about the old Springfield School and the schoolmaster’s house located on Domain Ave is planned to be installed next year at Springfield School. The Springfield event was part of a two-day commemoration which included unveiling of a plaque in the Christchurch Arts Centre on the site of the former Christchurch Boys’ High which was Alley’s secondary school.

Rewi Alley was a writer, educator, political activist, revolutionary, social reformer, potter, and member of the Communist Party of China. He was a prolific western writer about 20th-century China, and especially about the communist revolution. Born December 2, 1897, he dedicated 60 years of his life to the Communist Party of China. He was a key figure in the establishment of Chinese Industrial Cooperatives and technical training schools, including the Peili Vocational Institute (also known as the Bailie Vocational Institute or the Beijing Bailie University). Alley was born in Springfield and named after Rewi Maniapoto, a Māori chief famous for his resistance to the British military during the New Zealand Wars of the 1860s. His father was a teacher, and Alley attended primary school at Amberley; then Wharenui School in Christchurch, where his father was appointed headmaster in 1905.

He finally attended Christchurch Boys’ High School. His mother, Clara, was a leader of the New Zealand women’s suffrage movement. He then enrolled in the First NZ Expeditionary Force in 1916. Alley arrived in China on April 21, 1927. Over the next 10 years he worked variously as a fire officer, factory inspector and relief worker, he laboured among the Chinese trying to improve their living and working conditions. He came to greater prominence during the Japanese invasion of China in 1937, after he was involved in efforts to found the Association of Chinese Industrial Cooperatives Commonly known as Gung Ho/Work Together he aimed to organise small-scale selfsupporting co-operatives which created employment for workers, while continuing production to support resistance against the Japanese. Alley died in Beijing on December 27, 1987, not long after his 90th birthday.

Your Local Views Summer: A season of many things Mayor Sam Broughton writes about summer in Selwyn IT’S SUMMER-time, the weather has been beautiful, and most people are looking forward to Christmas. Some of us love Christmas because of our memories of Christmas’ past. Some of us because of the excitement the day brings, and others because we love food (there are plenty of other reasons too). There are a number of things that summer reminds me of from a district council perspective too. FIRE RISK After the wet winter and good growth in spring, there is plenty of very dry fuel in the form of grass. Every summer there are fires that need an emergency reaction and we need to be prepared for fires again this summer. Have you thought about the safe exits from your property with your family if you can’t get down your drive? Our fire crews do an amazing job but they are all volunteers and are looking forward to a

break this summer too. Please be sensible with fire, even with gas barbecues. WATER RESTRICTIONS Our aquifers are currently nice and full after the recharge through winter so why do we have water restrictions?

The reason for restrictions is to ensure we keep pressure in our reticulation system and into people’s homes. The peak times for water use are in the mornings and in the evenings. Washing up and cleaning ourselves uses a lot of water.

Demand is particularly high through summer when people wash cars, and water lawns and gardens. Hence the water restrictions on the times the district council asks you to water lawns. It’s not that there isn’t enough water. It’s just that it would be very expensive to build the system to deliver enough water at peak usage when we can manage and lower the peak by thinking through the times we turn on the tap. DUSTY ROADS Selwyn has more than 1400km of shingle roads across the district. The dust from these roads can be dangerous while driving and is a huge nuisance to fami-

lies living on the road. Please think about following distances when travelling on dusty roads and remember that slowing down for people walking on roadsides or outside homes is much safer, creates less dust, and is also courteous. The cost to seal our shingle roads is between $100,000$200,000 per kilometre, depending on the road. This cost is not currently something the district council is looking to fund. However, roads can be sealed by adjacent landowners. The district council has also approved a dust suppressant that was trialled last summer and proved effective. Both of these options are at the adjacent land owners cost. HEB is our roading contractor and can talk you through the costs of either option should you want to know more. Council hands out uni scholarships SIX YEAR 13 students have received a tertiary scholarship from the district council to help fund their future studies. Lincoln High School students Lucy Turner and Lincoln Roper, Ellesmere College’s Ella McClure and Jack Dudley, and Darfield High’s Abigail Cider and Rachael Phillipson, each received Selwyn District Council tertiary scholarship awards. Lucy said she was overwhelmed to be announced as a recipient for the scholarship. “I was so honoured to be rewarded for my contribution and hard work over my time at Lincoln High School,” she said. Lucy plans to study a Bachelor of Sport at Canterbury University. She looks to one day to be involved in high performance sport, influencing others, as well as becoming a top athlete. The club achieved ‘quality club mark two’ accreditation. The programme aims to identify, support and highlight football clubs in New Zealand which are well-run, communityfocused organisations. More than 50 clubs across seven different federations currently hold QCM one accreditation. However, Selwyn United has become the first to reach level two. “It’s a wicked indication of the brilliant work they’ve been doing at Selwyn,” said Mainland Football community football manager Martin Dodgson. “When you put together really good planning with some very dedicated people to execute that plan and a high demand for football, you get the perfect recipe for a high performing club.” QCM assesses a number of factors on and off the field

across the following criteria: Club administration and leadership, planning and finance, compliance, volunteers, referee development, player development, coach development, and community engagement. New Zealand Football supports QCM clubs with logos for their websites, letters of support for fundraising and gaming trust funding applications. “They should be proud because it’s not an easy bar to reach and they’ve set a great example,” said New Zealand Football community development manager Jamie Milne. Selwyn United was formed with the merger of the Rolleston and Ellesmere football clubs in 2012. Tips for a happy pet Emotions often govern the decision to get a pet and every year, unwanted animals are left at the SPCA because that cute puppy has grown into a hungry demanding dog or owners shift location and cannot take the pet. Whether a cat, dog, guinea pig, bird, tropical fish or some other animal, shelve the sentiment for a moment and consider whether you have the time, room or budget for a pet. Pets need looking after and dogs are top of the list. If you truly want a pet, you will be repaid with love. Taking on a pet requires commitment. Dogs need exercising, which is great if you do. Your trusty friend will have you out walking or jogging off the excesses of Christmas, helping you keep fit throughout the year. Kittens, puppies and dogs all need to be entertained so if you have a pet or one is expected on Christmas Day, add a few items under the Christmas tree. Avoid chocolate as it is potent for dogs. Small amounts upset their stomachs and larger quantities can cause serious health issues like heart problems. Your dog will be delighted with a bone, toy or specially made dog biscuit. Your feline friend will love a small ball, feathers, tunnel, scratching post and even a cardboard box.

Dogs need lots of toys to keep them entertained, something that will please the neighbours. Avoid unnecessary water use during peak demand times (6am–9am and 4pm–9pm) to help maintain water pressure for everyone. Use a watering can or hand-held hose instead of a sprinkler and avoid watering in hot or windy conditions.

“Everyone, particularly all the contractors led by local company McLenaghan Contracting, has worked extremely hard to have the playground ready for Christmas. This playground is for the whole district and we hope that it becomes a special place for families to enjoy,” Mr Reid says. “The park features are based on the ideas of local school kids – the kids wanted a mouse wheel, a big slide a fort and a flying fox, so we put those things in.” Mr Reid expects there will be a lot of interest in the opening of the playground and suggests that if possible, people wait for a day or two before visiting the park. “We’re expecting a huge number of people to visit the Foster Park playground, and we want to make sure everyone enjoys the experience – so please be mindful and respectful of others and be safe. If the playground looks too busy, we suggest that you choose another time to visit, or wait for the initial rush to subside,” he says.

From Thursday 21 December to Sunday 24 December, there will be Council and community support staff at the playground to ensure all children enjoy the new playground safely.

Playground design A key feature of the playground is a large four metre high mound with a slide and flying fox. A fort on top of the mound has a tunnel slide winding to the ground. The playground also features a natural play area and a mouse wheel along with other popular playground equipment.

A festive fun summer With lots of last minute things to do, this time of year can be a rush, completing Christmas present and food shopping, along with packing for a planned holiday away. Remember to take time out to chill and enjoy this festive time of the year, making the most of the opportunities to share a little Christmas spirit with others. The local pools at Darfield, Sheffield and Southbridge will also be open over the holiday period for a refreshing swim while there are lots of other places to enjoy a dip like the Pegasus Bay or peninsula’s beaches. Until the end of January, children up to 12 years can also participate in the district’s libraries Selwyn Summer Reading BINGO, which sets reading tasks that will add another dimension to the holiday period and have them chilling out with their head

I WAS alarmed last month when I noticed many white furry growth patches over my apple tree. These cottonwool-like patches were produced by the woolly apple aphid, eriosoma lanigerum. The waxy, cottonwoollike substance is a secretion produced by the aphid to protect it from natural enemies, the weather and the sticky honeydew it also excretes. are found in large knots, pruning scars on branches or trunks, and the roots of apple trees. It is a native to North America, where elm is its primary host, but it is now a worldwide pest in apples. In New Zealand, it is the only aphid of economic importance on apples. Like other aphids, this species sucks sap for

nutrition that can result in stunted plant growth or even death. The good news is, a small wasp parasite – also introduced from North America – can help control the aphid. The presence of the parasite in an aphid population can be confirmed by the circular exit holes in the top of the aphid hosts.

His wife is supportive and has a custom Hudson sedan whilst one of the projects waiting for his magic touch is an alloy bodied early 1920s Rolls Royce. Another local man Mal Hurrell, who runs the Weedons based Custom Made Garage Doors, has a nice collection of custom cars including his latest, a black 1932 Ford ‘hiboy’ roadster, powered by a 350 Chevrolet and automatic transmission. It will be this car’s first outing to the Rangiora show. “I think he’s had all his cars there at one time or another,” says Craig Stare, organiser of Muscle Car Madness. “There’s a huge amount of collector cars being built in garages around the Selwyn area.” Muscle Car Madness is a family oriented event with three generations of some families attending. It will be held from Thursday, 25th January to Sunday, 28th January 2018, at the Rangiora A&P Showgrounds in Ashley Street, Rangiora. Competitors will be coming from all over New Zealand and even some from overseas, to show their cars and enjoy a weekend of activities at Muscle Car Madness in January. One man who will be there again this year is Bill Casey who has attended the event nine times, travelling all the way from Minnesota in the United States. Classic cars, street machines, muscle cars and hot rods have become a big hobby in New Zealand with many businesses having spawned from this. One such person is Dave Jeffery who runs a small part-time hobby business in Rolleston, building some of the wildest ‘rat rods’ in the country. How safe is your driving? We consider ourselves good drivers, albeit with the odd mistake yet our driving prowess would improve by driving defensively, bringing with it safer roads. Unfortunately, too many drivers engage in dangerous behaviour appearing not to recognise that unsafe driving is the main cause of accidents. Speeding – One of the main causes of road accidents is excessive speed especially when cornering. Driving too close to the car in front or tailgating – Many have a misconception about driver reaction time. This is the length of time it takes for our brain to register we must press the brake, our body to react, and our foot to push the pedal. The car will also take time to completely stop. Driver reaction time varies from person to person. When totally alert it might take 1½ seconds so the two-second rule helps ensure a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. If travelling faster, conditions are poor like heavy rain, towing something, or driving a larger heavier vehicle, longer will be needed. To determine a two-second gap, as the vehicle in front passes a landmark count ‘one thousand and one, one thousand and two’. If your vehicle reaches the roadside marker before you count two, you are following too closely. Intimidation through bully boy tactics – Behaviour of this kind is dumb and reflects impatience and an inability to recognise the danger of driving too close to another vehicle. Impatience when driving – This can lead to poor judgement on the road like cutting corners. You may get there minutes earlier

Driving under the influence – Intoxication impairs judgement. We think we can drive safely but we no longer have the mental capacity or quickness to do so because alcohol is a muscle relaxant. Allowing distractions – Easy ways to cause an accident or road hazard are through distractions such as turning your head to talk to someone in the car, looking at things on the roadside, texting or talking on a cell phone (even hands free). You will not be looking at or fully concentrating on the road. Driver fatigue – We can feel sleepy after driving a long distance, especially on a hot day. Often the focus is on ‘getting there’ rather than appreciating the journey and taking breaks to keep fresh and alert. Headlights not on when poor visibility – If light is poor, other drivers may not see your vehicle. Turning the lights on is also a good practice when driving on country roads, especially if a motorcyclist. Driving defensively saves lives and helps ensure you and your family return home safely.

Technology company completes capital raising round Farmlands Cooperative Society Ltd has taken a shareholding in farm software company FarmIQ Systems Ltd, as part of a capital raising round, joining shareholders Landcorp Farming Ltd, Silver Fern Farms Joint Ventures Ltd and Veterinary Enterprises Group Ltd. A New Zealand-based technology company, FarmIQ Systems Ltd develops and markets software for farming and agribusiness. FarmIQ chairman John Quirk welcomed Farmlands as a shareholder and also the decision by Landcorp to increase its shareholding. “The FarmIQ board wanted to achieve a broad shareholding to reflect FarmIQ’s role as the provider of an open, independent platform for farming and agribusiness. The shareholding companies now comprise two farmer-owned co-operatives, a national veterinary business and a land-based, state-owned enterprise. Between them, they represent the value chain from farm suppliers, farm consultants and farmers to processors. Milk processor opens new wetmix kitchen Synlait Milk has opened its new wetmix kitchen, which will enable it to simultaneously run both large-scale infant formula spray dryers. This will double the amount of infant formula powder that can be produced at the Dunsandel site, from 40,000 metric tonnes (MT) to 80,000 MT per year. “We were at the point where our current wetmix facility was at capacity, and our consumer demand was continuing to grow,” managing director and CEO John Penno says. “Building this new wetmix kitchen will relieve that pressure.” Synlait has invested $37 million in the new wetmix kitchen, which is at the core of the production process. It is where the dry ingredients (such as dairy proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals) are mixed into the liquid milk. That mixture is then sent to the dryer, where it is dried into infant formula base powder. Mixing the dry ingredients into the liquid milk before drying ensures a superior blend quality.

The project has been in the planning since December 2015 and contractors began work on site in February this year. At times there were up to 125 contractors on site per day, but the construction of the wetmix kitchen did not disrupt the activities of other areas on site. “We’re really happy with how the build went,” Mr Penno says. “It was a smooth process, which was completed on time and within budget, without the need to alter our day-to-day operations.” Designed with staff in mind, some manual steps (e.g. lifting and tipping large bags of ingredients) have been reduced with the help of automation. This creates a safer environment and provides operational efficiencies. “It was really important for us to make this new facility as user-friendly as possible. We want our employees to be safe at work, and to work under the best possible conditions,” he says.

My lemon trees are looking a bit over-grown at the moment, is it ok to prune them now?

Fresh lemons are so tasty, they are a great addition to any garden, and their health benefits are fantastic! As far as looking after your trees, here are the top things you need to know.

Answer:

Make sure they are planted in good soil. If you haven’t added any organic compost to the garden bed for a while, get on to this now. Adding vital organic matter will help to keep the soil healthy, as it creates the perfect growing environment for your tree. Sheep pellets are an excellent addition as well. Your tree will benefit from a regular annual feed of Intelligro Citrus Fertiliser to help them produce their juicy fruits. Fertilise in spring and summer, at around 300g per square metre. You will want to sprinkle the fertiliser around the drip line (where the outer leaves fall) and then water-well afterwards. They will also need plenty of water at this time. By keeping on top of fertilising

and watering, you will keep your plant healthier, it will produce more fruit, and greatly reduce their chance of disease and attacks from pests.

Pruning only really needs to be done to keep the tree tidy, to remove any damaged or diseased areas, or to increase air circulation around the plant. Make sure you use sharp secateurs, and make clean cuts. Prune on fine days during this time of year, and fertilise and water afterwards. Don’t go overboard with pruning – it doesn’t need it!

A Christmas tradition

The warmth of a New Zealand summer adds to the cheer of the festive season. While few of us ‘deck the halls with boughs of holly’ as was traditional in England in the 16th century, we adorn our homes in a way that is similar to those in the northern hemisphere. Christmas is celebrated in different ways throughout New Zealand with many people celebrating some aspect of the festive season whether it is connecting with distant friends, spending time with family, entertaining, or sharing gifts. For those with young children, a trip to Santa will be on the list while young and old may check out the light displays adorning certain households around the district and city, with the Seawards’ Christmas light display topping the list. Every year, Carl and Maureen Seaward put on a wonderful light show that draws thousands of people to their 650 Shands Road property near Prebbleton. Over 300,000 lights form an interactive display, accompanied by synchronised music. The light display is open every night from 8.30pm to midnight, until the 30th December, with a charge of $5 for those over 15 years. By now the Christmas tree will no doubt be up and adorned with tinsel and colourful baubles. Some observe a tradition of adding a new decoration to the collection each year, adding a little more interest. Colourful streamers, wreathes, fresh Lillies and Poinsettia will also increase the festive feeling. Delegate decorating tasks and present wrapping to the older children who might be encouraged to make paper streamers, create a table centrepiece, and decorate their own Christmas paper. Making shortbread in Christmas shapes, fudge and other edible treats will also keep them occupied. For those who have last minute shopping to do, there are some wonderful gift ideas for all ages, in the local shops around the district.

A festive table cloth and Christmas decorations will add sparkle and a candle centrepiece will create atmosphere if dining at night. Birds cause spouting problems

Birds nesting in roof gutters can be a fire hazard. Their eggs and chicks attract rats and mice that make their home and build nests in the roof cavity, chewing on electrical wiring when hungry leading to the potential for a fire. The debris left by birds’ nests is also a problem if a downpour blocks spouting and water seeps into the roof. This can cause considerable damage to wall linings and other materials. Leaf litter can also cause flooding. “Leaves can sit in spouting for weeks and become soggy when it rains,” advises Rohan, owner of Gum Leaf. Bring colour into your garden Colourful flowers, shrubs and trees add beauty to the garden, lifting our outdoor environment with many plants adding a tinge of colour in their blooms, leaf colour or bark. Over summer, dahlia, hydrangea, roses, hebes, manuka, later flowering azaleas, lavender, petunias, marigolds, dianthus and calendula will all bring colour to the mix. For new gardens, these, like other plants in your garden, will need the water kept up as they get established. As autumn emerges chrysanthemums provide a contrast as does pineapple sage, keeping bees coming around to feast on the latter’s deep crimson flowers that signal winter’s on its way. Over the cooler period, leucadendron, grevilleas and hellebores put on a show as will the odd pansy. As the rocket flowers, avoid the temptation to pull it out so bees can enjoy its offering and you can harvest a little seed for future crops. When spring rolls round again, bulbs that have been planted in the cooler months like daffodils, tulips,

jonquils, sol de ors, hyacinths, snowdrops and crocus will bring yellows, blues and more colour in, popping their heads up to signal winter is over. Gardens often look their best and most colourful in spring when fruit trees blossom and shrubs like rosemary and lilac are covered in flowers and bees. Magnolia trees will be in bloom while camellias and rhododendrons will put on an impressive show. Flowering plants provide nectar for native birds and bees, with the latter often drawn into the garden by taller plants, especially those with mauve, blue or yellow flowers, explaining why so many can be seen on rosemary, marjoram and calendula flowers. Garden hideaways With the really hot weather that arrived early in December, this season is shaping up to be one of those particularly warm summers when having shaded areas will be essential to enjoying spending time outdoors. Sun shades over decks, screens that block the sun, vines covering pergolas and secluded areas in the garden all help to make the extreme temperatures more bearable while also offering a place away from chilly easterly breezes or gusty nor’ west winds. Planting areas of your garden for shade will offer a wonderful spot to sit with a book, coffee or wine while making your outdoor space much more interesting for young and old alike. Rather than putting only borders of your section into garden, bring out the odd bed with a paved or grassed path between two areas of planting for an idyllic spot to linger, and cool place to work in the garden on those really hot days.

Trees offer the height and opportunity for shade. Add in shrubs that grow around fence height with lower growing plants including flowers at the base, for the perfect makings of a botanical looking garden that will be stunning to look at. A full garden need not be a lot of work when mulch is spread around, or a forest garden approach taken where there is little bare space. Lush broad leafy green shrubs add real character to a garden though may need more watering. In contrast, tropical looking palms, cacti and succulents are dry lovers enjoying full sun and minimal water. Be mindful too that raised garden beds will dry out more so plants in these areas will need extra watering. In shadier parts of the garden, that offer shelter from the frosts and where watering can be kept up, pungas and ferns will provide a lush look. Other natives, like pittosporums are much hardier and also

fast growers, coping more readily with dry conditions. These are wonderful for an almost instant green belt though will need cutting back when established. They might also be used for a hedge as can be photinia, abelia, corokia, grisilinia, Mexican orange blossom, taller growing buxus, or feijoa for a fruity option. If gardening is not your thing, you can still brighten your outdoors with rustic, earthy colours on walls and fences along with fence art. White is reflective and glary so not such a good choice for sun shades and outdoor blinds in a sunny spot. Tone light colours down by positioning a few large potted plants around your patio or deck. Constructing fences or having commercially made wind breaks installed are also good ways to offer shelter for your garden so you can make the most of the lovely hot days ahead.

Selling a property over summer Keep the grass and plants looking green. Traditionally, spring has been the favoured season for showcasing a home and garden to attract the right buyer however over the years, the summer holiday period has been found to be a successful option. “It’s an occasion when we have more leisure time to explore and ponder properties on offer while visiting holidaymakers have a chance to consider new locations and lifestyle options,” explains Joe Brankin from Mike Pero Real Estate, Rolleston and West Melton. Whilst professional real estate offices are often closed over Christmas and New Year, most have staff available to deal with business activity that may arise throughout the holiday period. For those who have a property on the market during this time, it is just as important to keep it presented well. “Ensure the home has a fresh airy feeling to help create a desirable impression,”

suggests Joe. Surplus garden growth should be tidied and where possible, lawn and garden watering undertaken to keep the grass and plants green and healthy looking. Joe says that evidence of last night’s barby is never a good look as is dirty dishes stacked high on the bench or unmade beds and bathrooms that have not been cleaned. A clean and tidy house is always a winner. De-cluttering will also help present your home at its best. Any furniture that is tired is best removed and less photos and ornaments displayed. Strategic placement of outdoor furniture should be practical and inviting rather than cluttered or ‘in the way’. While you may think your dog or cat is adorable, when the home is open for viewing your pet is best out of the house so tie up your dog or better still, take it a walk. Have a wander around your property

to see what needs fixing. Do the paths need sweeping or plants trimmed back, especially from a walk way. Fix the little problems like a dripping tap or cracked window and re-shingle paths and driveways that are getting a bit bare. While we often live with these things, they may put a buyer off. Where a house is vacant, it will be more attractive to buyers and likely achieve a higher price if it is staged with tasteful furniture and accessories, a task that can be undertaken by a company specialising in this service. Staging allows a prospective buyer to imagine how they would live in the home and how their belongings would fit into each room. Properties sell all year round and while we may be on holiday, the right buyer for your home may be out looking these summer holidays.

While buying your first home can be a nerve-wracking experience, buying your second (or third) isn’t much easier. First home buyers may face a whole bunch of barriers, but the stakes can feel pretty high for people who are looking to upsize, downsize or just move house due to family circumstances or job changes. In many ways, the process is the same. You need to write your wish list – where the property is, what size it is – and think about how much you want to spend. This is where the buy first or sell first conundrum comes in, because it’s much easier to figure out how much you have to spend if you have already sold your first property. A property is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it at the time that it’s for sale. It’s unwise to hedge your bets solely on an algorithm-generated valuation, the back-of-an-envelope calculation or recent rating valuations.

Selling first means you have freed up any equity and you have a firmer budget to work with. However, in a slow market it can mean that you are left scrambling to find ‘the one’. Even if you do find the right property, it can take longer than you might anticipate to reach settlement on it, which means you may have an unspecified period between exiting your last home and moving into your new one. This can be particularly tough for people with children and pets, especially in an area or at a time of year when there is a lot of competition for short-term rentals. If you do sell first, it’s a good idea to try to negotiate a longer settlement period to give yourselves a bit more breathing space. Ask your real estate agent and lawyer for advice on how to do this for – because you’re the seller, you get to set the terms and conditions for your sale process.

Buying first makes sense in lots of ways, particularly if your search area is very defined. If a property that ticks all the boxes comes on the market it can be hard to resist the pull of putting an offer on it. If you decide to go for it, you’ll need good financial advice and nerves of steel. If your offer is accepted you may find yourself in the position of owning two properties – and having to service their respective mortgages if the settlement dates don’t align perfectly. It can feel like an eternity while you wait for your first property to sell, and if the market suddenly slows it can be tempting to take the first offer you receive in order to get the place off your hands. Before you do anything rash, talk to your lender or a mortgage broker about what your options are in this situation. You are likely to need bridging finance to cover your offer on the new home – depending on your circumstances and the method of sale you may need access to these funds quite quickly. Be aware that owning two homes will also have insurance implications – you will need both to be covered. If you are planning to buy first, you can make the sale of your existing property a condition of your offer. While this takes the pressure off, it may also make your offer less attractive to a seller. A good compromise may be to try to negotiate a longer settlement when you buy the new property, which will give you more time to sell. Talk to the real estate agent selling the property to find out how you can negotiate this in a way that the seller will be happy with. There’s no perfect, one-size-fits-all solution in this situation. Perhaps the best

advice is that if you are starting to think about buying it’s a good idea to get your property and your finances in order. Talk to your lender or a mortgage broker and give them an indication of your plans. Start talking to real estate agents in your area to find out what might be coming on the market, and ask them for an assessment of demand for a property like yours. Tackle all those jobs around the house that have needed doing all year – trim those overhanging branches, replace the broken letterbox and repaint the scratched front door.
